Connecting generations, Indigenous and Non Indigenous,
can assist in empowering our future of birthing

Many Indigenous and Non Indigenous groups living side by side in Australia still struggle to find a common ground and in most cases simply coexist. Women as in many cultures globally, are in a strong position to bridge this cultural divide in sharing their wisdom surrounding birthing and parenting, with the common goal of supporting their young and future families.

Birth is central to all cultures. Communities continue to strive for ways in which to effectively share this information with their young women and impart knowledge and contributes to community disconnectedness, poor and untimely access to services contributing to extremely wide gap between Indigenous and non Indigenous Perinatal outcomes.

Contributing to this gap is the inadequate understanding of cultural intricacies necessary for engagement and delivering health education messages. The influence of Western culture media and communications, has also caused further unmanaged complexities in Indigenous communities trying to maintain strong culture.

Midwives from Youth and Family Education Resources are diligently committed to designing and constructing education and training programs which involve extensive community consultation and input.  This innovative, engaging package is based on the historical ways of sharing information in the past i.e storytelling, drama, audio and visual images. The process is now benchmarked as a best practice model by the Australian government and Australian Institute of Family studies.

Connecting generations, Indigenous and Non Indigenous, can assist in empowering our future of birthing & Parenting women therefore improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. Fostering input from elders and youngsters, providing a culturally safe place for sharing pregnancy and parenting information and embedding traditional teachings within evidence based education, provides a sound foundation for encouraging healthier, stronger connected families and can assist in bridging the gap between our Indigenous and Non Indigenous Australians.
